All the Rest

Carbisdale Castle- one of the premier youth hostels in Scotland! It came complete with long, dark hallways, huge ballrooms and dining rooms, and bright orange walls with the strangest collection of artwork we'd ever seen. We even got lost trying to find our rooms!

Oban- a town on the west coast of Scotland. This picture was taken from the town Folly- an attempted reproduction of the Coloseum. Its construction provided jobs for the unemployed townspeople.

A view of the Isle of Mull, one of the inner Hebrides.

Tobermory, the biggest town on Mull. It was a very interesting and lovely place. We attended a local theater performance in the evening, and had a great time eventhough we didn't win any of the door prizes. Free cupons for the local laundromat would have been quite a win!

A few friendly locals.

Iona Abbey, on the Isle of Iona. We took a ferry there from Mull. It is the oldest religious spot in Britian. St. Colombo sailed to Iona from Ireland in the 600s, and the abbey and a convent were built later. Most of the Kings of Scotland are buried here.

A view of Edinburgh Castle from Grassmarket street- home to Edinburghs finest vintage clothing stores!

The Wallace Monument, in Stirling. He's the braveheart guy who vanquished the English at a series of battles in Stirling. There was a unanimous opinion amongst the Scots that the movie Braveheart was not an accurate representation of history- one man called it "Conan the Barbarian in a kilt".

Left to right: Vince (Martin's Dad), Gillian (Robin's wife), Colin (Martin's brother), Nicole, Dinah (Martin's Mom), and Robin. We visited with Robin and Gillian, whom we had met at the Royal Scottish Country Dance Ball. Robin is a radio ham just like Vince, so they had much to talk about. They live in a 100 year old manse in Kirkmichael, near Pitlochry.

The smallest (and finest!) distillery in Scotland. It produces only around 500 barrels of quality single malt whisky a year. The whisky is aged in old sherry casks, so is very sweet and smooth. The building here is where everything goes on- the grain roasting, fermenting, and distillation.

This is Hazel at Soldiers Leap, at the pass of Killiecrankie. From this very rock, an English soldier fleeing the Scottish soldiers leaped 18 feet to the other side of the river, and got away.

Hazel, Haggis, Neeps, and Tatties- good friends, good haggis, who needs more?

The charming fishing town of Pittenweem, part of the East Neuk area of Fife.

Hiking in the Glencoe mountains- followed by a swift descent down using the seat of our pants as sleds!

A mountain school used by local teachers for field trips. It was built by the students themselves, who used teamwork to drag the logs to build it up the steep trail-

We had a lovely time, wish you had all been there!
